Anne Eller, "We Dream Together: Dominican Independence, Haiti, and the Fight for Caribbean Freedom" (Duke UP, 2016)

Summary

In contrast to official narratives that reiterate claims about hostility between Haiti and Santo Domingo since the 19th century, Anne Eller's, We Dream Together: Dominican Independence, Haiti, and the Fight for Caribbean Freedom (Duke University Press, 2016) goes a long way towards both historicizing those narratives and digging deep into an array of popular sources to argue for a complex history of anti-colonial alliances and struggles for autonomy. In addition, Eller connects anti-colonial struggles that historians usually study separately, and reframes the ways that we understand the end of slavery and the onset of independence throughout the region.
