Hawkes Professor of History Emeritus at George Mason University, examines the life and career of the prolific German artist Max Liebermann. Liebermann, a pioneer of German modernism, portrayed scenes of the Dutch countryside and rural life, along with portraits of Germany's cultural and political elites. Deshmukh describes Liebermann's life and career in wonderful detail, while also demonstrating how the art world in Germany impacted and was impacted by the wider events of German history.
