About Nicole Curato

I am a Professor of Sociology at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at the University of Canberra. My work examines how democratic politics can take root in the aftermath of tragedies, with the Philippines as my primary area of expertise. I wrote the prize-winning book Democracy in a Time of Misery (2019, Oxford University Press) and edited the Duterte Reader (2017, Ateneo de Manila University Press/Cornell University Press). I am actively taking part in public conversations about the importance of amplifying the voices of ordinary citizens in political decision-making. I have published op-eds for the New York Times and Al Jazeera, served as resource person for the BBC, ABC News, and other major television networks. I host television specials for CNN Philippines that spotlights the voices of Filipino millennials to spark collective action. I also hosted a limited series podcast for New Mandala, entitled Philippines without Clichés.

Nicole Curato is a Professor of Sociology in the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at the University of Canberra. She co-hosts the New Books in Southeast Asia Studies channel.
