From Tunisia to Egypt to Syria, the Arab Spring saw protesters storm to the street demanding reform and revolution. Five years later, most of these countries remain forever changed yet far from reformed. Peace has not been lasting across the region, and Lynch's book attempts to reconcile what explains the ongoing warfare. He argues that this upheaval may be at its start, rather than at its completion. Authoritarian regimes remain in place in many countries and the U.S. continues to struggle to find a sustainable role.
