Welcome to New Books in African American Studies, a channel on the New Books Network. I am your host, Adam McNeil. On today’s podcast, we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of scholar Michel Rolph-Trouillot’s 1995 blockbuster book, published by Beacon Press, Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of HistoryWe are celebrating this monumental anniversary with a roundtable conversation with three of my favorite scholars outchea in the world of Blackademia: Dr. Neil Roberts, Dr. Crystal Eddins, and Dr. Bradley Craig.

Dr. Roberts is Chair and Professor of Africana studies, political theory, and the philosophy of religion at Williams College, where Roberts also serves as the W. Ford Schumann Faculty Fellow in Democratic Studies. A high school teacher, debate coach, and NCAA Division 1 soccer player prior to graduate school, Roberts is the recipient of fellowships from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Social Science Research Council, and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation as well as a member of the Caribbean Philosophical Association Board of Directors.

Dr. Eddins is an Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at UNC Charlotte, where her fields of research and teaching are African Diaspora Studies; Historical Sociology; Social Movements & Contentious Politics; Postcolonial Sociology; Race and Ethnicity; Women and Gender Studies; the 18th-19th Century Caribbean; and the Digital Humanities.

Last and certainly not least, Dr. Bradley Craig is an interdisciplinary historian of the Atlantic world and the African diaspora, with particular interests in slavery, intimacy, gender, and sexuality. His current book manuscript, Oathbound: The Trelawny Maroons of Jamaica in the Revolutionary Atlantic World, is a history of oath-making as a radical practice of negotiating intimacy and belonging. He currently is a Barra Postdoctoral Fellow at the McNeil Center for Early American Studies.
