In contrast to official narratives that reiterate claims about hostility between Haiti and Santo Domingo since the 19th century,
Anne Eller's,
We Dream Together: Dominican Independence, Haiti, and the Fight for Caribbean Freedom (Duke University Press, 2016) goes a long way towards both historicizing those narratives and digging deep into an array of popular sources to argue for a complex history of anti-colonial alliances and struggles for autonomy. In addition, Eller connects anti-colonial struggles that historians usually study separately, and reframes the ways that we understand the end of slavery and the onset of independence throughout the region.
