Remembering Barbara Horvath: A Discussion with Livia Gerber

Summary

The sociolinguistics community, particularly in Australia and the US, mourns the recent passing of pioneering sociolinguist Barbara Horvath. To honor her memory, we bring you an oral history interview that Livia Gerber did with Barbara in 2017. The interview was commissioned by the Australian Linguistic Society as part of a larger oral history project on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the society.

In the interview, Barbara reflects on the early years of her career as an American linguist in Australia in the 1970s, and how linguistics and language in Australia have changed since then.
