About Emanuel Stoakes

I am a recovering journalist who still freelances (bylines in The Guardian, New York Times, Washington Post) with experience of reporting from South East Asia and Oceania. I am currently working as a Tutor at my local university (the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand) while I finish my interminable postgraduate study. My interests cut across a range of fields and disciplines, but primarily, in accordance with current academic focus, I am keen to explore how truth (obviously a contested notion), facticity and the communicative process can be directed toward notions of justice and democracy, especially in a world system that is undergoing seismic changes (due to strategic competition between superpowers, the rise of emerging technology, climate change). I am also interested in journalism generally in terms of its shortcomings and evolution, how it can be applied anew to the facilitation of a 'public sphere' in a complex information evironment in a manner that allows for broader representation of communities, ideas and a discussion of long-term solutions to existential questions (such as 'deep adaptation' to climate change), with all the implications that accompany this. I'm also very interested in the phenomenon of the emerging far-right movement globally, since I covered the events of March 15th 2019 here in Christchurch and its aftermath (primarily for the Washington Post) - what makes people believe in the resurgent ideas that motivate white-extremist terror; how to deradicalise; is this linked to the new information environment?
