About Viktoriia Grivina

I'm a writer and a cultural researcher from Kharkiv, Ukraine. I've graduated from V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University majoring in English and German Linguistics. In 2018-2020 I was awarded Erasmus Mundus Master’s scholarship with Crossways in Cultural Narratives programme (Universities of Tubingen, St Andrews, and Bergamo). In 2020 I presented her Master’s dissertation (The Influence of Street Art on Community Development in Kharkiv, Ukraine). In September 2020, I joined the project “(Un)Archiving (Post)Industry” implemented by Lviv Center for Urban History jointly with the University of St Andrews. In 2021 I started a PhD research at the University of St. Andrews, currently exploring the transformations of mythologies and aesthetics of the wartime city. In 2023 my book proposal, Potatoes and Other Hobbies, was selected for the short list of Nan Shepherd Prize for underrepresented authors (UK). In 2024 I was short-listed for Creative Future non-fiction award and received the first prize at Dream Foundry fantastic fiction competition. My first book, an essay collection Kharkiv. A War City, is set to be published in Summer 2025.

I've been interested in anthropological and creative research of Ukraine, urban spaces and decolonial practices. I've been thinking of interviewing the authors of the following books:

Life in Spite of Everything by Victoria Donovan (on ethnographies of the Ukrainian east)

Ecocide in Ukraine by Daria Tsymbalyuk

Night Train to Odesa by Jne Stout

Bread and War: A Ukrainian Story of Food, Bravery and Hope by Felicity Spector

All of them are written on the intersection of academic and creative ethnographic reportages.

I'm a writer and cultural anthropologist from Kharkiv, Ukraine. Author of two books, Kharkiv - A War City (2025) and Kharkiv is a Dream (2025, with Hjordis Clemmensen and Vasylysa Shogoleva) at Ibidem Verlag.
