Peter Astras is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition at Syracuse University. He holds three master’s degrees, including one in history, and completed his PhD in English at St. John’s University in 2022. During his doctoral studies, he was awarded a Hagley Center Exploratory Grant in 2021 and a Hagley Center Henry Belin du Pont Research Grant in 2022 from the Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Delaware. His dissertation, “You Think You Know What Nature Is”: The Literary and Historical Ecologies of Lake Hopatcong, explores the relationship between human activity and the natural world. Expanding on this work, his book, Lake Hopatcong: A History of New Jersey’s Largest Lake (2024), traces the lake’s evolution from its geological origins to its modern significance, illustrating its impact as both a cultural landmark and a driver of regional transformation. His research interests focus on ecocriticism and environmental studies, particularly through the lenses of literature, history, place, and rhetoric.
