About Edward Dimendberg

I am Professor of Humanities at the University of California, Irvine, where I teach architectural history and comparative literature. As host of New Books in Architecture, I draw on my knowledge of architectural and urban history, German studies, geography, modern literature, and film to enrich my conversations with authors that seek to place their scholarship within their discipline, while also locating their books in a larger context, not least of all challenges in the present. My books on the built environment have been published by the Getty Research Institute and the university presses of California, Chicago, Harvard, and Oxford. The German architecture magazine Bauwelt frequently publishes my criticism. I am the principal of Dimendberg Consulting LLC (www.dimendberg.com) and offer individual consultations and workshops to help scholars obtain support for their work and publish it. In 2018 I received a Guggenheim Fellowship in Architecture. My scholarship also has been supported by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Getty Research Institute, the American Academy in Berlin, the Graham Foundation, the NEH, and the Fulbright Foundation. In 2005 I became the inaugural Multimedia Review Editor of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians and introduced reviews of films and other non-print media into it. From 1990-1998 I was Humanities Editor at University of California Press and published 100 books across multiple disciplines. I later chaired the Millard Meiss book prize jury of the College Art Association and served on the Faculty Editorial Committee of UC Press and the Publication Committee of the Modern Language Association. My current book project treats documentary films about architecture and seeks to understand the contribution of moving images to the analysis of the built environment.
